WildBird Aerial vs Mabē Monarch: A Registered Nurse's Honest Comparison
By Rose Martin, RN

The WildBird Aerial and the Mabē Monarch are the heavyweights of the premium baby carrier world. They are beautiful, highly sought after, and built with quality materials that last. But for a first-time parent, the decision often comes down to more than just aesthetics. You are asking: Which one is safer? Which one is easier? And which one won't leave me with a backache after 15 minutes of wear?
At Heyday, we believe you shouldn't have to guess when it comes to your baby's gear. As a Registered Nurse and a mom of three, I have personally vetted every carrier we carry. I look at gear through two lenses: medical safety and real parenting reality.
Here is a breakdown of the WildBird Aerial vs. the Mabē Monarch.
The Medical Foundation: Hip Health and the M-Position
Before we talk about aesthetics, we have to talk about anatomy. As a nurse, my first priority is the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) standards. We want to promote healthy hips for our babies in everything, most importantly our baby carrier use.
Both the WildBird Aerial and the Mabē Monarch are designed to support the M-Position. This is where the baby's knees are pulled up higher than their bottom, creating a shape like the letter M. This position ensures the hip joint is seated deeply and securely, which is critical for healthy development in your baby's first year.
The RN Takeaway: Both carriers follow IHDI guidelines for baby carriers and are considered hip-healthy. You can rest easy knowing that whether you choose WildBird or Mabē, your baby's hip development is protected with proper use of either carrier.
The Big Functional Difference: Outward Facing
This is usually the deal-breaker for most parents.
Mabē Monarch: This is a 3-in-1 powerhouse. It allows for inward-facing, back-carry, and outward-facing positions. If you have a baby who wants to see everything once they have full head and neck control, usually around 6 months, the Monarch is the winner.
WildBird Aerial: The Aerial is a dedicated inward-facing and back-carry specialist. It does not offer an outward-facing option. WildBird leans into the philosophy that inward-facing is the most ergonomic and calming position for both parent and baby.
Note from the RN: It is hard to achieve the preferred M-Position while outward facing. Recommendations from the IHDI state to limit outward facing in any baby carrier to 20 minutes or less and use it only occasionally. Limiting outward facing carry also prevents overstimulation for your baby and fosters a sense of closeness with the parent.
Longevity: How Long Will You Actually Wear Them?
Both carriers are designed to be used from 7 lbs right out of the box, but they have different maximum weights.
Mabē Monarch: Supports babies from 7 to 35 lbs.
WildBird Aerial: Supports babies from 7 to 45 lbs.
The Reality Check: While the Aerial has a 10 lb advantage, I always tell parents that 35 lbs is a lot of toddler to carry on your chest or back. Most parents naturally transition to strollers or hip carriers by the time a child hits that 35 lb mark. However, if you are a high-mileage hiking family or have a very tall child, that extra 45 lb limit on the Aerial provides some nice peace of mind.
Newborn Safety: No Insert Needed
If you have ever fumbled with a bulky infant insert in a parking lot while your newborn is crying, you know why newborn-ready is a big deal.
The Mabē Monarch features an adjustable seat that you can narrow specifically for tiny legs. The WildBird Aerial uses its soft linen-blend fabric to mold to a newborn's natural C-spine curve. Both ensure the baby is visible and kissable, the gold standard for babywearing safety.
Safety consideration for newborns: To protect your baby's airway, the middle of their ear should be at or above the top panel of the carrier when worn. Achieving this fit will be timed differently for every baby. Please take extra care when adjusting the carrier for your baby. You can raise the placement of the waistband on your body to give your baby an extra boost to sit above the head panel.
Parent Ergonomics: The Power of the X-Strap
As a nurse, I am not just worried about the baby's spine. I am worried about yours. One of the reasons we chose to carry both the Mabē and the WildBird is their shared commitment to X-straps.
Many traditional carriers use H-straps like a backpack, which put a lot of pressure on the tops of your shoulders and the base of your neck. Both the Monarch and the Aerial cross over your back in an X shape.
Why the X-Strap matters:
- Weight Distribution: It spreads the baby's weight across the widest, strongest part of your back.
- Posture: It pulls your shoulders back naturally, helping you maintain better posture.
- Ease of Use: You don't have to reach behind your neck to clip a difficult chest strap. You simply buckle at the sides.
The Spit-Up Test: Care and Maintenance
Premium carriers are an investment, and as an RN, I know that hygiene is paramount. Here is how to keep your investment in top shape.
Mabē Monarch (88% Cotton, 12% Linen)
- The Method: Hand wash cold or machine wash on a cold, delicate cycle.
- The Secret: Use a garment bag. This protects the hardware and prevents the straps from getting tangled.
- Drying: Reshape and lay flat in a well-ventilated area. Make sure to open the head support flap so the thickest parts of the padding dry completely.
WildBird Aerial (Premium Linen Blend)
- The Method: Cool water, hand wash, or gentle machine cycle.
- The Secret: Use a detergent free of optical brighteners. This is vital for maintaining those earthy, signature WildBird colors.
- Drying: Hang dry or dry flat. Linen is naturally breathable and dries relatively quickly.
The Final Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?
Choose the Mabē Monarch if... if you want the occasional option of outward-facing carry for a curious baby, you love the feel of an 88% cotton, 12% linen blend, and you want a carrier that feels like a high-end fashion accessory without sacrificing function.
Choose the WildBird Aerial if... you want the highest weight limit possible, you live in a warmer climate where ultra-breathable linen is a must, and you prefer a streamlined, minimalist aesthetic that focuses on the closest inward-facing bond.
